Backup Codes for Two-Factor Authentication

What backup codes are, how to use them, and how to regenerate them if you run out or they're compromised.

Backup codes are a set of one-time-use codes that let you log in to your Krokanti Notes account if you lose access to your authenticator app. They are generated when you first enable 2FA and can be regenerated at any time.

What Are Backup Codes?

Each backup code is an 8-character code in the format XXXX-XXXX. You receive 8 codes when you enable 2FA. Each code can be used exactly once — after use, it's marked as consumed and cannot be reused.

Think of backup codes as emergency keys: keep them somewhere safe and separate from your authenticator app.

Where to Find Your Backup Codes

  1. Go to Settings → Security
  2. Under the Two-Factor Authentication section, click View backup codes
  3. Your remaining codes are listed (used codes are grayed out)

Store your backup codes somewhere safe immediately after generating them. If you lose your authenticator device and your backup codes, you may be permanently locked out of your account.

Using a Backup Code to Log In

If you can't use your authenticator app:

  1. Go to the login page and enter your email and password
  2. On the 2FA prompt, click Use a backup code instead
  3. Enter one of your 8-character backup codes (with or without the dash)
  4. Click Verify

The code is consumed — you'll see one fewer code in your settings after using it.

Regenerating Backup Codes

If you've used all your codes, lost your list, or suspect someone has seen them:

  1. Go to Settings → Security
  2. Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Regenerate backup codes
  3. Enter your current TOTP code (or an existing backup code) to confirm
  4. All old codes are immediately invalidated
  5. A new set of 8 codes is generated — save them now

Regenerate your backup codes after using one, to replenish your supply back to 8. It's a good habit to do this periodically.
